WtvConverter Error Codes

OK, errors in software happen. However, everything in software is dependent on something else. This is very much the case with WtvWatcher.

The only 'error codes' I've seen come out WtvWatcher after over a year of running it myself and receiving feedback from dozens of devoted users, are actually error codes from the Microsoft WTV Converter utility.

Notably, errors relating to source recording formats (such as the H.264 format that networks use to ship HD signal out lately) are something that we're all pretty much stuck with until Microsoft updates their WTV Converter utility to support the [now common] format. Or you can swap the 'Action Command...' preference in WtvWatcher out with a reference to some 3rd party utility that assures success in transcoding H.264 content to MPEG2 content (wrapped in a DVR-MS container of course).

Funny thing is...and don't get me wrong, I love everyone who uses my software, but...if WtvWatcher doesn't work on some recordings, the worst thing is that they still have commercials in them. At this point, I say a) I'm fine with lifting my remote hand to skip commercials like everyone else in the world with a DVR, or b) maybe I should turn the TV off and go outside and exercise a bit. Just my most recent opinion as a soon-to-be-new-dad. Just saying.

Anyway, so that people can benefit from what I (and the rest of the fan base) know about the error codes we've seen, here's a list of them:

Error Code 5: "WTV Converter cannot convert the file from .wtv to .dvr-ms format because the content is not compatible with the .dvr-ms file format"

This means that the network your TV show was recorded from is sending out their content as H.264 (often means HD) format, which Microsoft has not updated the WTV Converter utility to support. There is no fix for this yet, but the good thing about relying on the built-in Microsoft utilities are that, if they ship a future Windows update that fixes this issue, you'll just start to see everything begin to work again.

Error code 2: "File is in use by another program..." and "Destination file already exists."

More than likely, Media Center is not streaming the show to disk in a timely manner, or not reporting proper file dates, size, or attributes as expected.

Or maybe there's already a dvr-ms file by that name. For some reason though, WtvWatcher can't delete the old file and doesn't want to endlessly delete the new file just to try again, just to not be able to delete to source file, just to delete the new file, just to...and so on.

I could be wrong, but I think error code 4 is that the "action mask" is missing a slash. should be

C:\Windows\ehome\wtvconverter.exe "{0}" "{1}\.dvr-ms"

I'm getting lots and lots of 'wtvconverter.exe' exited with error code '4'. Any ideas what that means and what I can do to fix it?
